WELCOME !

Argentina  welcomes you.

Buenos Aires, its capital at the edge of

Río de la  Plata, as broad as a sea,

 welcomes you .

And each Brownie, girl guide and person in charge for the Association of the Girl Guides of Argentina opens the door of his heart to wish you from now on a beautiful world Meeting rich in  outstanding experiments, growth and fertile exchanges.

Between  pain and  hope, such could be the title of this  letter of presentation since us, Argentinians,  live this difficult period of a new crisis  which impoverished the half of the inhabitants but which, on other part, caused many initiatives of solidarity to the four corners of the country.

Argentina counts a population of 37,000,000  inhabitants of which 50% know a level of impoverishment until now unknown by most of all,  consequence of a rate of unemployment of 20%. Thus 7 children out of 10 are born  within poor families whose, paradoxically, the heads of households have a high level of schooling. Argentina covers a surface of 3,800,000 km2  and is governed by a federal system of 23 provinces.

Chart opposite will help you to locate the  6 great areas of the country
recognized for their  historical,  geographical  and econimical characteristics :
the northern North , the North-East, Cuyo, Patagonie, the  Center and  Buenos
Aires  with its suburbs.  It is in this city that we will reside at the time of
World Meeting  and the Council.   3% of the population goes down directly from
native people which, during last decades,  fought for the recognition and the
revalorization of their  ancestral cultures.  In the process of conquest and
colonization of the XVI and XVII centuries,  other people added to the features
                                                                                                                  of the "población criolla" .

Since the end of XIVe century  until  our days, our country  knew successive waves
of immigration which contributed to give  to the population a unique character  with
                                                                                                                 multiple facets

The large migratory of Mediterranean Europe, end of the XIXe century,
contributed, under the instruction of the Argentinian governments, to populate
a  vast  territory and to develop a state on the model of agricultural exporter  wich
required  workers  as well in the farms as in the arising industry .
