                                         Saint Stanislaus

Saint Stanislaus (Bishop and Martyr) was born to the Polish nobility, in a pious family. His parents had been childless for 30 years, so he was considered a gift of God. Educated at Gniezno in Poland and in Paris. He was ordained by the bishop of Cracow and became the vicar of the cathedral. He was very demanding of his subordinates, being an example of a holy life himself. As a bishop of Cracow (1072), he visited  all of his parishes every year and devoted great deal of time to preaching. Apart from that, he was very generous to the poor. At the beginning, the relationship between the bishop and the King of Poland, Boleslaus the Bold, was satisfactory, but declined when the King began to be led by his primitive instincts and set a bad example to his people. Stanislaus threatened to excommunicate the King, which he actually did in 1079. As a result, he was murdered by the King himself, while celebrating a Mass. According to the legend, his body, quartered after the murder, grew together as a sign of his holiness. Being a martyr, Stanislaus was canonized in 1253.
