In contrast to most European countries affected by the Reformation, there were no religious wars in Poland. This gave rise to a notion of ‘a country without stakes’, a phrase used to refer to Poland-Lithuania. The lesson of tolerance was embedded in the country’s geographic location between the West and the East, the Western and the Orthodox Christianity. Where else can you find a Catholic and Orthodox church in one village ? Where can you admire a gothic cathedral with an Orthodox-like interior decoration ? Which Christian state admitted Muslims into its army ?
