The end of the Piast dynasty gave rise to a number of privileges given to nobility over the years, in time leading to a situation, where the king was not able to take any decisions without the consent of the Parliament as early as at the beginning of 16th century. Therefore, the political system of the Kingdom of Poland is often referred to as ‘Noblemen Democracy’, as noblemen accounted for about 10% of the population of the country. However, surrounded by absolutisms in 18th century, the system proved inefficient and gradually led to the Partitions of Poland.
