The
end of the Piast dynasty gave rise to a number of
privileges
given to nobility over the years, in time leading to a situation, where the king
was not able to take any decisions without the consent of the Parliament as
early as at the beginning of 16th century. Therefore, the political system of
the Kingdom of Poland is often referred to as ‘Noblemen Democracy’, as noblemen
accounted for about 10% of the population of the country. However, surrounded by
absolutisms in 18th century, the system proved inefficient and gradually led to
the Partitions of Poland.
