Battle of Grunwald by Jan Matejko
During the times of Fragmentation of Poland, Teutonic Order, the forerunner of the Prussian state, arrived at the lands north of Poland and its aggressive politics soon became a serious threat to the Polish statehood. In 1370 the Piast dynasty came to an end. The throne of the Kingdom of Poland passed to Jadwiga, the relative of the Piasts. The threat from the Teutonic Knights encouraged Polish and Lithuanian rulers to unite against the Order. As a result of the agreement, Jadwiga married Jogaila, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and they were crowned Queen and King of Poland and thus a form of long-lasting personal union was established, putting the Jagiellonian dynasty on the Polish throne for about two subsequent centuries. The Teutonic Order was defeated in a great battle of Grunwald in 1410.
