                              Years 1138 to 1364
              


The subsequent Polish rulers of Poland from the Piast dynasty lead the country with changeable luck. In 1138 the country was divided into several smaller provinces by Boleslaus the Wry-mouthed and each province was assigned to one of his sons. The divided realm was severely damaged during the Tatar invasion of 1241, but continued to grow rapidly nevertheless. However, it was only at the beginning of 14th century that Polish stated was united again.

       
 
 Poland at the times of Casimir the Great

During the reigns of the last Piastian kings, Vladislaus the Elbow-high and Casimir the Great, Poland became a strong, well-managed kingdom, actively participating in the political, economic and cultural life of Europe. In 1364 a university was founded in Cracow, the second university foundation in Central Europe after Prague.
