Poland
at the times of early Piasts
In 966 Polanian ruler from the
Piast dynasty, Mieszko, adopted Christianity. The year is regarded as
marking the origin of Poland as a Christian, internationally recognised state.
Mieszko’s baptism allowed the country to enter the arena of European politics,
soon resulting in a crowning of Mieszko’s son – Boleslaus the Brave. Boleslaus’s
Kingdom encompassed Greater and Lesser Poland, Mazovia, Pomerania, Silesia and
the territories stretching to the West of Greater Poland, which is more or less
the territory of today’s Poland.
