Pole’s
attitude towards authority was shaped by Poland’s history. The weak position of
the king, in time leading to a situation short of anarchy in 18th century,
shaped the notion of superiority of an individual over the state. In 19th and
20th centuries, the opposition to the authorities, which were imposed from
abroad and hostile, was a synonym of being a decent Pole. This attitude of
treating authorities with disrespect is not adequate in a self-governed country,
however, and is a cause of numerous problems in the contemporary Poland.
