The Yalta Conference
After the war, as a result of the Yalta Conference, Polish territory lied entirely within the Soviet zone of control. Poland lost vast eastern territories to the Soviet Union, but gained a considerable area in the west. The transformation of Poland into a communist, USSR-dependent state began. Oppositionists were prosecuted and murdered, the results of the elections rigged. The Catholic Church managed to remain the only independent organisation in the country and as a consequence was prosecuted. Private business was nationalised and industrialisation enforced.
