Second
World War (part 2 )
The old town in
Warsaw after the Uprising
Polish troops fought in many fronts of the war: Polish Air Force made a vast contribution to the Battle of Britain, many units fought in Africa, in the invasion of Italy, in the eastern and western fronts, Polish vessels escorted allied convoys and fought in tens of naval battles (e.g. Narvik and hunt for Bismarck). In addition to this, partisan troops in the country performed innumerable military sabotage acts and assassinations. By the end of the war, regular Polish troops amounted to 600,000 and partisan troops to more than 300,000. In August 1944 the Uprising broke out in Warsaw. Despite incomparable Nazi advantage, the Uprising lasted 63 days, while it was planned to last only 5, after which time the Soviet offensive was expected to reach Warsaw. It did not, as Stalin order his forces to stop on the other bank of Vistula, to let the Uprising be suppressed by the Germans. As a consequence, the city was annihilated by Nazis and 200,000 people died.
