                                 Second World War

On 1 September 1939, with the German attack on Poland, World War II broke out. 17 September Soviet army entered Poland with the intention to annex its eastern territories. The defence managed to last until the beginning of October. Part of the territory was transformed into what was known as "das General-Gouvernement", and part was annexed directly onto Nazi Germany. The eastern territories were occupation by the Soviets. Both powers applied a policy of systematic extermination of the Polish population. The Nazis murdered 3 million Polish citizens of Jewish ethnicity, and over 2 million non-Jewish Poles. Over 250,000 Polish civilians of all ethnic backgrounds were deported eastwards by the Soviet authorities, where many of them died. The Polish Government worked in exile in London, from where it ran the underground organisations at home.
