were also disadvantages to the location of Poland between the West and the East.
Since 18th century, when great powers emerged both east and west of
Polish-Lithuanian borders, the political situation of Poland-Lithuania worsened
considerably, which was one of the causes of the Partitions of the country. In
the 20th century, Polish territories became the arena of struggles between
foreign forces in the two world wars. However, the conflict between the
countries that had annexed Polish territory in 1795, created an opportunity not
to be missed by the Poles.
