                                                                 Coffin Portrait

Modern artist aside, there is something very characteristic of Polish baroque painting that you may be interested to know, and this is coffin portrait. Coffin portrait, usually painted on tin, was popular in Poland in 17th and 18th centuries. According to custom, such portraits could be painted only after model’s death, which required special skills of the artists. The portraits were attached to the coffin during the ceremony and hanged in the church afterwards.
